The Summer Solstice, falling between the 20th-22nd June each year, is when the sun is in direct alignment with the northern hemisphere. This is considered the longest day of the year. The Summer Solstice is sometimes known as the start of the “astronomical summer” or also referred to as “midsummer”.
The spring equinox marks the time that the sun will begin to be in the sky for longer periods of time. At the summer solstice, the sun meets it’s halfway point of the journey to the autumnal equinox which will call in darker days.
SYMBOLISM
The summer solstice symbolises more expression, feeling good, prosperity, extravagance, manifesting and good spirits. It is the season of bounty, abundance and beauty.
HISTORY
The summer solstice was a time that our ancestors spent restocking food that they had cultivated and harvested through the spring season. This was a time of abundance, celebration and joy.
In Wiccan and Pagan traditions, the summer solstice is usually celebrated under the name Litha. Litha is a celebration of the sun and honouring it as it shines from the highest post in the sky.
