Glass Breaking/ Release Ritual

These are simple to do as long as you have a safe location to do them in. But glass breaking rituals are a great way to let go of suppressed emotions and past experiences.

Ritually breaking glass is a tradition that is often seen as Jewish wedding ceremonies - where the groom crushes a glass (usually wrapped in a cloth or napkin) with his foot. This is done for a number of reasons; to commemorate the falling of Jerusalem to honour their ancestors, and also to symbolically transmute all of the “cracks” of the relationship into the glass for them to be left there.

Spiritually, glass symbolises rebirth and new beginnings especially when we look at the characteristics of broken glass we can also get deeper insight into why it works so powerfully. Broken glass while smaller is more stable than fragile glass that can be broken, it has withheld the test and remained glass - just sharper!

In Hindu it is believed that accidentally breaking glass will bring someone to you with good news while in the west we are taught that breaking glass - specifically mirrors, will bring 7 years bad luck.

As we know, a with any ritual you choose to do, everything is about intention. Choosing to do a glass break ritual can be very empowering and help you to effectively release. The best times to do a ritual of this sort would be on a full moon, last quarter moon or after shadow work.

So! Let’s get into how we do it! I told you it was super simple!

Begin by buying some plain white (purity) dinner plates & some permanent markers, assorted colours works best if you can!

Then write all of the things you no longer want in your life on the plate, whether that is anger you are holding onto, or a bad habit you can’t kick, negative things you tell yourself, the options are endless.

Then go outside, choose an appropriate area like your backyard or the woods if you don’t have the space at home and throw the plates as far and as hard as you can.

Take a few moment to look at all the words on the plate and think about how they made you feel, and why you want to release them. Think about how you will feel once these words are no longer playing a part in your life, then use all the energy you can muster up to launch those words out of your life and watch them shatter into unfixable pieces.

If you dont want to have to pick up the broken pieces then I’d advise putting them into cloth bags/sacks and smashing them with a hammer.

Make the ritual your own, and do what works best for you. Just be mindful about leaving broken glass around and causing danger to the animals who’s habitat you are releasing in!
