In various different cultures around the world, and even in our own if we look back to the older generations, some form of ancestor commemoration is not only present but a very important part of everyday life. Over the years however, some generations have lost this tradition of keeping it so rooted in our day to day lives. Instead we tend to only honour our ancestors on their birthday, anniversary of their death or when we visit their resting site!
WHO ARE YOUR ANCESTORS AND WHY SHOULD YOU HONOUR THEM?
Technically, your ancestors are the people in your family who have passed away, however you can consider anyone who played a significant role in your life as an ancestor and honour them in the same way.
Your ancestors, when they were alive would have been looking out for you, wanted you to do well, they would have wanted the best for you, and nothing changes once they cross over – they remain active in your life (even if you don’t realise it). You can connect with most of them but the OG’s will hold the most weight.
They protect your family – When they cross over they gain a higher spiritual perspective, allowing them greater foresight of the problems or positive aspects of your life. So they often guide, protect and give you messages to help you on your journey.
Your ancestors serve as intermediaries between yourself and supreme beings (Orisha, Deities, Angels etc.) Establish and build a connection with your ancestors BEFORE trying to call on or invoke any other spirits. Your ancestors will have a better connection to them than you and you want someone who has your back if you ever need help in dealing with them.
You can help each other heal, and work together to break generational curses. Once you have built a relationship with them you can ask them to assist in your healing and they may also ask you for help for their own journeys.
