Burn Ritual

Burn rituals have been a part of human tradition for centuries, crossing cultural and spiritual boundaries. From cultural ceremonies to honouring deity’s to a girl who is going through a difficult break up!

Generally though, they are a means to release the old, purify the spirit, or set intentions for the future.

While practices vary widely, here is a general step-by-step guide to conducting a basic burn ritual

Please feel free to adapt these steps to fit your own beliefs and intentions.

  1. Preparation:

  • Gather materials: You will need a fire-safe bowl or cauldron, matches or a lighter, loose paper, a pen, and water or sand for safety. Optionally, you might include white candles, incense, crystals such as clear quartz or selenite or other items that hold personal or spiritual significance to promote cleansing.

  • Find a safe location: Choose a well-ventilated area, away from flammable materials. Outdoors is ideal, but if you're inside, ensure windows are open.

  • Set your intention: Decide what you wish to achieve with the ritual. This could be letting go of certain feelings, thoughts, or memories, or it could be setting intentions for the future.

  1. The Ritual:

  • Write it down: On a piece of paper, write down what you are releasing or the intention you are setting. Be as specific or as general as you feel is necessary, and write it present tense “I am releasing/ I let go of” rather than future tense “I will/I want to”. When you have finished writing, fold your paper AWAY from you, turn it COUNTER CLOCKWISE 90° and fold away from you once more.

  • Light your bowl or cauldron: If using candles or incense, light these first to mark the beginning of your ritual.

  • Burn the paper: Carefully set the paper alight and place it in the bowl or cauldron. As it burns, visualize your intention being released. Some people like to say a prayer, chant, or simply focus deeply on their intention during this part.

  1. Conclusion and Clean-up:

  • Reflect: Allow the ashes to cool. This is a good time for meditation or reflection on the ritual you've just performed. Consider what this release or intention means for you moving forward.

  • Dispose of the ashes: Once cool, decide how you wish to dispose of the ashes. Some prefer to scatter them outdoors, if you’re releasing something, as far away from your home as possible is good, or at a crossroad. Scattering the ashes symbolises a return to the earth or the finality of letting go. Others may choose to keep them to use them as part of another ritual.

  • Close the ritual: Extinguish any candles or incense. Some people like to say a closing prayer or statement to mark the end of the ritual. Clean up your space, ensuring it's left as it was before your ritual.

Remember, safety is paramount. Never leave fire unattended and always have water or sand close by to extinguish flames if necessary. The power of a burn ritual comes from the intention behind it; the flames are merely a tool to help visualize and enact that intention. Tailor your ritual to suit your needs and beliefs, and may it bring you clarity, release, or whatever you seek.

Burn rituals can also be used as a form of manifestation, you just need to alter your intentions, & any tools you choose to incorporate.
